Urgent action is needed to improve the transport system across Melbourne's north.

It’s time for transformative solutions that will meet our needs now and into the future.

As the Northern Councils Alliance, we represent one million people across the municipalities of Banyule, Darebin, Hume, Merri-bek, Mitchell Shire, Nillumbik Shire and Whittlesea.

Inadequate connectivity, congestion and pollution are everyday realities for residents and businesses in Melbourne’s north.

Our public transport system is inefficient and irregular.

We experience severe traffic congestion, long trips to hospitals, challenges in accessing jobs and education, and increasing social isolation.

Sustainable transport options are also key to our future planning.

These problems are getting worse, because we are one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia.

What the community is saying

We need better buses...

I rely on public transport to get around. Getting into the city is ok, but that's when the bus timetable aligns with the train. My nearest station is only a four-minute drive but it takes 30 minutes by bus. It's also a 40 minute wait between bus services services and that's when they actually run. A 35 minute drive to Eltham takes me over 90 minutes by bus with three changes. It's too long and not safe. I don't think I really have any choice but to buy a car next year.
